Diploma Programme in Urban Development Studies - For Practitioners by Practitioners


Applications are invited for a limited number of participants to attend a capacity building program in Urban Development and Management, to be conducted from AUGUST to NOVEMBER 2010 in East Africa.

The training is organized by the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development Studies (IGS) in conjunction with the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) in the Netherlands, the Economic and Social Policy Initiative Group (ESPIG), with support from UN-HABITAT.

The main aim of the programme is to facilitate the growth of innovative urban managers who analyze and develop their cities based on a thorough understanding of urban theory and practice.

The programme serves as a follow-up to training conducted in 2009 and offers a unique opportunity for participants to attain a Diploma in Urban Development Studies by completing a series of foundation and advanced modules that shall be offered at intermediary periods at the national and regional levels.

These include;

Foundation Modules

Module 1: Introduction to City Development Strategies; 9-13 August 2010 (Nairobi)
Module 2: Local Economic Development; 6-10 September 2010 (Nairobi)
Module 3: Environmental Planning and Management; 27 September - 1 October 2010 (Nairobi)
Module 4: Financing City Development Strategies; 11-15 October 2010 (Nairobi)

Advanced Modules

Module 5: Promoting Local Economic Development; 1-5 November 2010 (Mwanza, Tanzania)
Module 6: Application of Environmental Planning & Management; 15-19 November 2010 (Kisumu)
Module 7: Operationalizing City Development Strategies; 6-10 December 2010 (Kampala, Uganda)

The programme is open to Central Government Ministries, Local Authorities, Private Sector, Civil Society and other stakeholders in Africa. Each module will be offered at a fee of Kshs 49,500 pIus VAT at 16%.

For East Africans residing in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi the courses are offered at USD 695 while USD 975 for wider regions. The fee covers the course facilitation, training materials and daytime meals (morning and afternoon tea and lunch). It however, does not include travel and accommodation expenses for the duration of the workshop.
